Job summary

Specialty contractors run their labor on SmartBarrel: who was on site, for how long, on which job, at what rate. Behind every punch is a rule. Daily overtime in California. A union agreement's shift differential. Prevailing wage on a public job. Per diem by distance. A meal-break penalty. You know those rules cold, and you turn them into product.

When Sales, Support, Engineering or a client's payroll manager asks "how should this work?", you answer, then you write it down so nobody has to ask again. You own the product areas where time becomes pay: pay rules and earn codes, overtime, union and prevailing wage, compliance, and the payroll exports that feed our clients' ERPs.

This is not a role where you collect requirements and hand them off. You bring the answer. If you've been the person a contractor's whole payroll department calls when a rule doesn't make sense, this is your job.

Key responsibilities

  • Be the domain authority: answer the payroll, timekeeping, union, prevailing wage and productivity questions from Sales, Support, Implementation, Engineering and clients, then document each answer so it's settled for good.
  • Own the time-to-pay roadmap: overtime and pay rules, earn codes, per diem, shift-based pay, break tracking and attestations. Decide what to build next and why.
  • Write the rule before the code: specs that settle every edge case before development starts: multi-state overtime, mixed union and non-union crews, multiple trade classifications in one day, retro rate changes, union reciprocity.
  • Build compliance into the product: certified payroll (WH-347 and state forms), Davis-Bacon and state prevailing wage, fringe benefits, apprentice ratios, meal and rest breaks, and Canadian provincial employment standards.
  • Connect labor to productivity: help turn hours, cost codes and quantities into the productivity and job-cost insight contractors actually manage to.
  • Sit across the table from clients: get on calls and job sites with payroll managers, CFOs and union administrators. Help close deals where the question is "can you handle our rules?"
  • Raise the team's level: mentor our Associate PM, and give Implementation and Support a payroll playbook so fewer questions need you.
  • Track the rules as they change: state overtime changes, new wage determinations, union contract updates. Our clients should hear about them from us first.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years in construction payroll, labor compliance or workforce/timekeeping, with at least part of it in product, implementation or solutions at a software company (or the reverse)
  • You can explain these without notes: FLSA vs. state overtime (including California daily and double time), Davis-Bacon and state prevailing wage, certified payroll, fringe benefits and union remittances, collective bargaining agreements, per diem taxability
  • Hands-on with at least one construction ERP or payroll system: Vista/Viewpoint, Spectrum, CMiC, Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, or a certified payroll tool like LCPtracker
  • Real product craft: you write specs, prioritize with reasons, and say no without losing the room
  • Comfortable with data: Excel at an expert level, SQL a plus
  • Credible with a CFO, a payroll manager and a foreman, all in the same day
  • Nice to have: Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Canadian PCP/CPM; Canadian payroll (CRA, provincial ESA, CCQ); time at a specialty trade contractor; construction tech or workforce SaaS experience; bilingual English/Spanish or English/French

What we offer

  • Competitive salary + stock option eligibility
  • 401(k) (US) / RRSP program (Canada, if offered)
  • Health, dental & vision insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance, including payroll certifications
  • Real ownership: you work directly with the CEO, a former specialty contractor, and you shape how thousands of field workers get paid correctly
  • A direct, fast-moving team that hates wasted time as much as you do: short meetings, quick decisions, no process for its own sake
